UK Cover Letter Writing Tips

Our UK CV Expert's Job Application Covering Letter Writing Guide

You should always write a Cover Letter to accompany your job application form, or your curriculum vitae. The purpose of the letter is to provide the hiring manager with a summary of your skills and how you match their requirements. For those impatient managers who just skim read your CV, your cover letter may be the thing that gets you noticed.

Most people are nervous about self-promotion so their CV and cover letter never truly state why they are great and a perfect match for the job they are applying for. Your cover letter may be the first contact the employer has from you, so it must attract their attention and intrigue them enough to want to read your CV and actually meet you.

The tone of your cover letter will depend on the type of company or institution you are applying to. If you don’t know anyone in the business, then keep it formal and benefits-driven. If one of your friends works at the business, then tell them that you are interested in applying for the job and ask if they would hand in your CV for you. Some companies reward staff up to £2,000 for finding them new employees. Your friend might just love you for it.

Here are our top tips for preparing and writing your cover letter:

  • Research:

The goal is to be invited for an interview which means that your cover letter is the best sales tool you have to explain why you should be selected to join their team. Doing a little research about the company will help you decide whether you really want to work for that company.

  • Review:

Go back to the job specification or job description. This is essentially a check-list of everything the hiring manager would like from their new staff member. As you read the list, tick each point that you can do and then think of an example case when you demonstrated those skills.

  • Group:

Now review your checklist and try and group each activity so that they fit into corporate terms such as: self-motivation, ability to delegate, good team-working etc.

  • Check:

Once you understand the key areas and skills the employer wants, go back to your CV and double-check that you have specifically used these words throughout your CV.

  • Write:

You are now ready to write your cover letter. Having completed your research, and matched your CV to their requirements, it should be much easier for you to write a few sentences confidently explaining why you are right for the job. Always include the job reference number and address your letter to the hiring manager. Your cover letter should fit on one page of UK sized A4 paper using a standard font such as Arial. Keep it to a standard 10 or 11 point font. Unless you are a model, do not include a photograph or use photographic paper to make your CV stand out.

  • Target:

Your letter must be addressed to a person. Any good direct mail campaign will target an individual, so your cover letter must do the same. It will demonstrate to the hiring manager that you bothered to research and find out who they are.

In summary, writing a professional cover letter that promotes your skills and experience is essential to getting through to interview stage. Realistically, the above steps should only take you one or two hours in total.
